Wild grape

Vitis vinifera subsp. sylvestris

Description

Wild climbing plant related to cultivated grapevine, producing small but tasty fruits. Highly resistant to extreme conditions and ideal for natural gardens.

Growing tips

Plant this climber outdoors in full sun for at least 6-7 hours a day, in well-drained, low-fertility soil, as it adapts well to poor Mediterranean terrain. Watering should be scarce once established, relying on natural rainfall and only irrigating during prolonged dry spells. Provide a sturdy support structure (pergola, trellis or wall) for it to climb, as it can reach up to 10 metres in height. It withstands frost down to -15 °C, so no winter protection is needed in temperate or Mediterranean climates.
