Sternbergia

Sternbergia lutea

Description

Summer bulb that blooms in autumn with bright yellow flowers. A very drought-resistant plant and perfect for Mediterranean gardens.

Growing tips

The Xantel (Sternbergia lutea) requires a full sun position with at least 6-7 hours of direct light per day, in well-drained, preferably chalky or sandy soil typical of Mediterranean gardens. Plant the bulbs in summer so they bloom in autumn with their characteristic bright yellow flowers. Watering should be very sparse, especially during summer when the bulb is dormant, as it tolerates drought well and excess moisture can cause the bulb to rot. It is hardy down to -10 °C, but bear in mind that it is toxic, so handle it with gloves and keep it out of reach of children and animals.
