Sorbus aria
Deciduous tree with silvery leaves on the underside and white spring flowers. Scarlet berries in autumn and adaptation to calcareous soils.
The whitebeam needs an outdoor location with direct sun for at least 6 hours a day and moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. It is very hardy and tolerates temperatures down to -20 °C, so no winter protection is required. It adapts well to calcareous, well-drained soils; plant it in autumn or spring in a spacious spot, as it can reach 8-12 metres in height. Bear in mind that the berries have mild toxicity, so caution is advised if children or pets are nearby.
