Pincushion Flower

Scabiosa atropurpurea

Description

Excellent cut flower with globose inflorescences in dark colors. Attracts pollinators.

Growing tips

Scabiosa needs between 6 and 9 hours of direct sunlight per day to bloom abundantly during summer and autumn; plant it in a well-exposed outdoor location. Water with moderate frequency, allowing the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings, and use well-drained soil to prevent waterlogging. It is frost-hardy down to -10 °C, making it suitable for Mediterranean and cold climates without the need for special winter protection. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage the production of new blooms and extend the flowering period.
