Rhododendron

Rhododendron ponticum

Description

Shrub with spectacular spring flowering. Requires acidic soil and partial shade.

Growing tips

The rhododendron needs acidic soil (pH 4.5-6), well-drained and rich in organic matter; use a specific substrate for ericaceous plants. Plant it in partial shade, with 2 to 6 hours of light per day, protected from direct midday sun. Water regularly to keep the soil moist but never waterlogged, especially during spring and summer. It is frost-hardy down to -15 °C, but avoid exposed positions with strong cold winds that may dry out the foliage. WARNING: all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested.
