Quercus coccifera
Small Mediterranean tree or shrub with spiny leaves and small acorns. Highly resistant to drought and poor soils.
The kermes oak (Quercus coccifera) requires an outdoor location with direct sunlight, at least 6-7 hours per day, as it is not suitable for indoor growing. Watering should be sparse, especially once established, as it is highly drought-tolerant and adapts well to poor, well-drained soils typical of Mediterranean climates. Plant it in autumn or spring, and do not worry about moderate frosts, as it withstands temperatures down to -8 °C. It is an easy-care plant that requires little maintenance once rooted.
