Pyrus communis
Elegant fruit tree with white spring flowers and autumn fruit.
The pear tree needs an outdoor location with full sun exposure (at least 6 hours per day) and moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, especially in winter. Plant it preferably in autumn in well-drained, slightly clay-rich soil enriched with organic compost. It is a very hardy tree, frost-resistant down to -25 °C, so it requires no winter protection in most Mediterranean and continental climates. Prune it annually at the end of winter to encourage fruiting and keep it at a manageable size within its natural height of 4 to 9 metres.
