Prunus dulcis
Mediterranean fruit tree that blooms in winter. Very drought-resistant.
The almond tree needs full sun exposure (at least 7 hours daily) and well-drained soil, preferably calcareous or slightly arid, typical of Mediterranean climates. Once established, it tolerates drought very well, so watering should be infrequent and only during prolonged dry spells. It is highly frost-hardy, withstanding temperatures down to -15 °C, so no winter protection is needed. Plant it in autumn in a spacious outdoor area, as it can reach between 4 and 8 metres in height and requires good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.
