Protea cynaroides
South African shrub with large, spectacular pink-red flowers, the national flower of South Africa. Adapted to Mediterranean and dry climates, with thick and resilient foliage.
Requires excellent drainage and poor soil. Water moderately in summer, minimally in winter. Avoid phosphorus-rich fertilizers. Can be grown in containers in cold climates and protected in winter.
