Poplar

Populus nigra

Description

Fast-growing tree for stream banks and wetland areas.

Growing tips

The black poplar needs an outdoor location with direct sunlight for at least 5-6 hours a day and abundant, regular watering, as it is a species native to streambanks and very humid areas. Plant it preferably in autumn in deep, moist, well-hydrated soil, ideally near a water source. It is very hardy and tolerates severe frosts down to -30 °C, so no winter protection is needed. Given its considerable height (up to 30 m) and spread (up to 6 m), allow ample space well away from buildings and underground pipes.
