Terebinth

Pistacia terebinthus

Description

Very hardy Mediterranean tree with aromatic pinnate leaves and attractive ornamental texture. Extremely drought tolerant and undemanding.

Growing tips

The terebinth is a very hardy Mediterranean tree that requires full sun exposure (at least 7 hours per day) and very infrequent watering, as it is extremely drought-tolerant; once established, natural rainfall is usually sufficient. Plant it outdoors in well-drained soil —even poor soil— and avoid compact or waterlogged conditions, which can be harmful. It withstands frost down to -12 °C, so no winter protection is needed in Mediterranean climates. Planting is best done in autumn or spring, and it is worth noting that the plant has mild toxicity, so care should be taken when handling it.
