Stone pine

Pinus pinea

Description

Large tree with rounded crown, characteristic of the Mediterranean landscape. Produces edible pine cones with pine nuts of great culinary value.

Growing tips

The stone pine needs full sun exposure (at least 6-7 hours per day) and is best planted in autumn or spring in well-drained, preferably sandy or light soil. Once established, it tolerates drought very well, so watering should be infrequent and only necessary during the first years or during extreme dry spells. It is a hardy tree that withstands frosts down to -10 °C, requiring no winter protection in Mediterranean climates. Make sure to give it plenty of outdoor space (it can exceed 4-8 m in height and 3-6 m in width) and avoid planting it in enclosed or indoor settings.
