Phaseolus vulgaris
Warm-season legume. Available in dwarf and climbing varieties.
The common bean needs an outdoor location with direct sun for at least 6 hours a day and should be planted in spring, once night temperatures stay above 10 °C, as it does not tolerate frost. Water regularly and moderately, keeping the soil slightly moist but never waterlogged, especially during summer flowering. Use well-draining, moderately fertile soil; climbing varieties need a stake or trellis to reach up to 200 cm in height. Bear in mind that raw beans can be mildly toxic and should always be consumed cooked.
