Black marjoram

Origanum onites

Description

Compact medicinal shrub with aromatic leaves used for infusions and cooking. White flowers in summer that attract pollinators.

Growing tips

This wild marjoram is a very hardy Mediterranean shrub that requires full sun exposure (at least 6 hours per day) and infrequent watering, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent waterlogging. Plant it in well-drained, preferably sandy or stony soil, as it does not tolerate excess moisture. It withstands temperatures down to -5 °C, making it suitable for outdoor growing year-round in temperate climates. The best planting times are spring or autumn, and a light trim after the summer flowering will help maintain its compact shape.
