Myrtle Berry

Myrtus communis subsp. communis

Description

Evergreen shrub-tree that produces small aromatic black berries. Leaves and flowers are highly fragrant and are used culinarily.

Growing tips

The myrtle needs an outdoor location with direct sun for at least 6 hours a day, as it is not suitable for indoors. Water it with moderate frequency, allowing the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings, and use well-drained soil to prevent waterlogging. It tolerates frost down to -5 °C, making it well suited to Mediterranean and temperate climates without the need for special winter protection. Plant it in spring in a spacious spot, as it can reach up to 4 metres in height and 3 metres in width.
