Myrtus communis subsp. balearica
Mediterranean shrub with aromatic leaves and small white flowers. Produces edible black berries.
The Balearic myrtle needs an outdoor location with direct sunlight for at least 6 hours a day and moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Plant it in well-drained soil, preferably of Mediterranean type, as it tolerates frost down to -5°C and is very hardy once established. The best times to plant are spring or autumn to encourage rooting, and it produces fragrant white flowers in spring and summer. Keep in mind that its berries and leaves have mild toxicity, so caution is advised around children and pets.
