Balearic Myrtle

Myrtus communis subsp. baetica

Description

Mediterranean shrub with aromatic leaves and fragrant white flowers. Produces edible black berries used as a condiment.

Growing tips

The Balearic Myrtle needs an outdoor location with direct sunlight for at least 6 hours a day, as it is not suitable for indoors. Water it with moderate frequency, allowing the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings, and use a well-drained, Mediterranean-type soil. It is a hardy shrub that tolerates temperatures down to -8 °C, so it can overwinter outdoors without issues in most Mediterranean climates. Planting is best done in spring or autumn, and bear in mind that its berries and leaves have mild toxicity, so caution is advised around children and pets.
