Mespilus germanica
Slow-growing fruit tree that produces medlars, a tasty fruit harvested late in the season. It tolerates poor soils well and is very resistant to diseases.
The medlar tree needs an outdoor location with direct sun for at least 6 hours a day and is very hardy, tolerating temperatures down to -15 °C without issue. Water with moderate frequency, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, and avoid waterlogging. It adapts well to poor, low-fertility soils, though a well-drained substrate will encourage better growth; plant it in autumn or spring. As a slow-growing tree, patience is key: harvest the medlars in late autumn, once the fruit has been touched by the first frosts and has softened.
