Mandevilla × amabilis
Tropical climbing plant with striking red star-shaped flowers. Grows rapidly in warm climates and requires support.
The Mandevilla needs an outdoor location with full sunlight (at least 6 hours per day) and a sturdy support to climb, as it can reach up to 3.5 metres in height. Water it regularly but moderately, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, and use well-draining compost. As it is sensitive to cold, protect it or move it to a sheltered spot when temperatures drop below 10 °C, since it does not tolerate frost. It has mild toxicity, so avoid contact with the sap on your skin and wash your hands after handling it.
