Lonicera japonica
Climbing plant with abundant flowering and intense aroma. Very attractive to birds.
Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) is a vigorous climber that needs a sturdy support (trellis, pergola or espalier) to reach up to 9 metres in height; plant it in spring in a spot with direct sun, with a minimum of 4-6 hours per day. Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, and use well-draining soil to prevent waterlogging. It is very hardy and tolerates temperatures down to -15 °C, making it ideal for outdoor Mediterranean settings with no need for winter protection. Note: it is a fast-spreading species — prune it regularly to keep growth in check — and be mindful of its mild toxicity if children or pets are nearby.
