Gladiolus tristis
South African species with cream flowers in an architectural spike, fragrant especially at night. An elegant and exotic plant suitable for warm-temperate climate gardens.
Plant Gladiolus tristis bulbs in spring in an outdoor spot with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, using well-drained soil to prevent rot. Water moderately during the growing season and summer flowering period, then reduce watering once the leaves die back. As it is not frost-hardy and has a minimum temperature tolerance of 5 °C, lift the bulbs in autumn and store them in a dry, cool place if you live in an area with cold winters. Keep in mind that the plant has mild toxicity, so handle it with care around children and pets.
