Gentiana lutea
Perennial plant with deep roots and bright yellow flowers. Its root is used for aperitif liqueurs and to improve digestion.
Yellow gentian needs between 4 and 7 hours of direct sunlight per day and is best planted in autumn in a deep, well-drained, slightly acidic substrate, as it develops very long roots. Watering should be moderate, keeping the soil slightly moist but avoiding waterlogging, especially during summer when it blooms. It is a hardy plant that tolerates temperatures down to -20 °C, but requires patience and expertise, as it grows slowly and takes several years to flower. Note: it has mild toxicity and is strictly an outdoor species.
