Fig Tree

Ficus carica

Description

Rustic and legendary fruit tree of the Mediterranean basin.

Growing tips

The fig tree needs an outdoor location with direct sun for at least 6-8 hours a day, as it is not suitable for indoors. Watering should be sparse, especially once established, as it tolerates Mediterranean drought very well; water moderately in summer and reduce watering almost completely in winter. It is very frost-hardy, withstanding temperatures down to -12 °C, making it a robust tree that requires no winter protection in most climates. Plant it in spring in well-drained soil, preferably calcareous or slightly clayey, and avoid overly moist ground to prevent root rot.
