Persimmon

Diospyros kaki

Description

Ornamental and fruit tree with showy orange fruits in autumn.

Growing tips

The persimmon is a hardy fruit tree that tolerates frosts down to -15 °C and adapts very well to Mediterranean climates; plant it outdoors in a spot with direct sun for at least 6 hours a day. Water with moderate frequency, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, and use a well-draining substrate to prevent waterlogging. It can reach between 4 and 8 metres in height, so choose a spacious spot in the garden; formative pruning in late winter will help maintain a good structure. Bear in mind that the fruits and some parts of the plant may have mild toxicity, so caution is advised around children and pets.
