Montpellier Broom

Cytisus scoparius

Description

Deciduous shrub with bright yellow flowers in spring, thin stems. Very resistant to drought and poor soil.

Growing tips

Scotch broom requires full sun exposure (at least 6 hours per day) and well-drained soil, even poor or sandy, as it is very sensitive to excess moisture; water sparingly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. It is a very hardy shrub that tolerates frost down to -12 °C, so no winter protection is needed in Mediterranean or temperate climates. Plant it in autumn or spring in spacious outdoor areas, bearing in mind it can reach up to 2 m in height, and handle it with care as all parts of the plant are toxic.
