Alpine Clematis

Clematis alpina

Description

Alpine clematis with elegant spring-flowering violet-blue flowers. Very hardy and ideal for vertical structures in high mountain gardens.

Growing tips

Clematis alpina is a frost-hardy climber that tolerates temperatures down to -15 °C and requires an outdoor position with direct sunlight for 5 to 9 hours a day; plant it in autumn or spring at the base of a vertical structure such as a trellis or pergola. It needs moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings, and prefers a cool, well-drained substrate rich in organic matter. Prune lightly just after the spring flowering to maintain shape without removing the stems that will bloom the following season. Bear in mind that it is mildly toxic, so wear gloves when handling it.
