Citrus aurantium subsp. amara
Shrub or small tree with very fragrant white flowers. Produces bitter oranges useful for marmalade and confectionery.
The bitter orange needs an outdoor location with direct sunlight for at least 6 hours a day and is perfectly suited to Mediterranean climates, tolerating temperatures down to -5 °C. Water it moderately, allowing the substrate to partially dry out between waterings, and use well-draining soil to prevent root waterlogging. Plant it in spring and feed it with a citrus-specific fertilizer during the growing season to encourage its aromatic flowering and fruit production. Keep in mind that it has mild toxicity, so handle it with care if children or pets are nearby.
