Centaurium erythraea
Bitter plant used in phytotherapy to stimulate appetite and improve digestion. It is used in infusions.
Common centaury needs an outdoor spot with direct sunlight, at least 5-6 hours per day, and well-drained, low-nutrient soil typical of Mediterranean areas. Water it moderately, allowing the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings, as it tolerates some drought but not waterlogging. It is a hardy plant that withstands temperatures down to -12 °C, so no winter protection is needed in temperate climates. Plant it in spring and expect pink flowers in summer; if growing it for medicinal use, harvest the aerial parts while in bloom.
