Castanea sativa subsp. crenata
Large deciduous tree that produces edible chestnuts. Large glossy leaves, white aromatic flowers.
Plant the chestnut tree outdoors in full sun (at least 6-7 hours daily) and in well-drained, acid or slightly acid soil, as it does not tolerate calcareous substrates. Water moderately, especially during the first years of establishment and during summer dry spells, avoiding both overwatering and prolonged drought. It is a very hardy tree that withstands frost down to -15 °C, so it requires no winter protection in Mediterranean or mid-mountain climates. Plant ideally in autumn or spring, bearing in mind that it can reach up to 20 metres in height and 12 metres in spread at maturity.
