Castanea sativa
A grand tree that produces nutritious chestnuts inside spiny burrs. It requires sufficient space and takes a long time to grow.
The chestnut tree needs an outdoor location with direct sunlight for at least 6 hours a day and plenty of space, as it can reach 20 metres in height. Water moderately, keeping the soil slightly moist but well-drained, especially during the first years of growth. It is very hardy and tolerates frost down to -15 °C, so no winter protection is needed in temperate climates. Plant it preferably in autumn or spring in acidic to neutral soil rich in organic matter.
