Turnip

Brassica rapa subsp. rapa

Description

Rapidly maturing vegetable with tender roots. Very cold-resistant and with edible leaves.

Growing tips

Turnip needs direct sun for at least 4-5 hours a day and is planted in spring or autumn, as it tolerates frosts down to -8 °C and prefers cool temperatures. Water regularly and moderately to keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged, as excess water can rot the root. Use a light, loose, well-draining substrate rich in organic matter, and avoid clay soils that hinder root development. Bear in mind that both the roots and the leaves are edible, and you can harvest when the root is 5-8 cm in diameter for the best tenderness.
