Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea spectabilis

Description

Mediterranean climbing plant with spectacular bracts of vibrant colors.

Growing tips

Bougainvillea needs between 6 and 10 hours of direct sunlight per day to bloom abundantly in spring, summer and autumn; plant it outdoors in a sunny, wind-sheltered spot, as it does not tolerate frost and the temperature should not drop below 3 °C. Water sparingly and allow the substrate to dry out between waterings, since it is a low-water plant and excess moisture can damage the roots. Use a well-draining substrate and provide a support or structure for it to climb, as it can reach between 2 and 6 metres in height. Bear in mind that it has mild toxicity, so handle it with care if children or pets are nearby.
