Swiss chard

Beta vulgaris subsp. cicla

Description

Leafy green vegetable with large leaves and colored stems, highly nutritious and versatile in cooking. Grows quickly and tolerant to variable conditions.

Growing tips

Swiss chard needs between 5 and 8 hours of direct sunlight per day and should be planted in spring or autumn in fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Water regularly and moderately, keeping the soil slightly moist but never waterlogged, especially during active growth periods. It is a hardy plant that tolerates light frosts down to -5 °C, making it ideal for Mediterranean climates and mild winters. Harvest the outer leaves from the base once they reach a suitable size to encourage the plant to keep producing new growth.
