Strawberry Tree

Arbutus unedo

Description

Mediterranean native tree with simultaneous flowers and fruits in autumn.

Growing tips

The strawberry tree is a rustic, easy-to-grow Mediterranean tree: plant it outdoors in direct sunlight (at least 4 hours per day) in well-drained, preferably slightly acidic soil, as it belongs to the Ericaceae family. Water sparingly once established, taking advantage of its excellent drought resistance; avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. It tolerates frost down to -10 °C, making it ideal for Mediterranean gardens with no need for winter protection. Autumn is the best time to plant it, and you can enjoy its white flowers and characteristic red fruits appearing simultaneously on the tree.
