Agave

Agave americana

Description

Succulent plant with great visual impact, ideal for dry gardens.

Growing tips

The American agave requires full sun exposure (between 7 and 10 hours per day) and very infrequent watering, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings, especially in winter. Always plant it outdoors in a well-draining substrate (sand or cactus mix) to prevent waterlogging, which is its main threat. It tolerates temperatures down to -5 °C, but in areas with severe frosts it is advisable to protect the base with a layer of gravel or mulch. Handle it with gloves, as the leaves and sap are toxic and can cause skin irritation.
