Hardy Kiwi

Actinidia arguta

Description

Vigorous climbing plant with small grape-like fruits with edible skin and kiwi flavor. Very frost-resistant and suitable for continental Mediterranean climates.

Growing tips

The hardy kiwi (Actinidia arguta) needs an outdoor location with direct sun for at least 6 hours a day and a sturdy support (trellis, pergola or wires) for its vigorous growth of up to 8 metres. Water moderately, keeping the soil slightly moist but well drained, and avoid both prolonged drought and waterlogging. It is very frost-hardy down to -15 °C, so it can overwinter outdoors without protection in continental Mediterranean climates. Plant it in autumn or spring in fertile soil and remember that plants of both sexes are usually needed to obtain fruit.
